Language support group for Tarandíne cange

The Wikimedia Foundation has brought together a new team of developers who are dedicated to language support. This team is to support all the languages and consequently it is not realistic to expect that the team members can provide proper support for your language. It is for this reason that we are looking for volunteers who will make up a language support team.

This language support team will be asked to provide us with information about their language. Such information may need to be provided either to us or on a website that we will indicate to you. Another activity will be to test software that will likely have an effect on the running of the MediaWiki software. We are looking for people who clearly identify their ability. Formal knowledge is definitely appreciated.

As much of the activity will be concentrated on translatewiki.net, it will be a plus when team members know how to localise at translatewiki.net.

Sezione pagine in dialetto barese cange

Saluti a tutti!
Non so fate voi. Speriamo di trovare una soluzione! Saluti!!

Quoto e approvo! ;) Saluti!

Language code conformance for BCP47 and HTML cange

This wiki uses an absolutely incorrect BCP47 in its lang="roa-Tara" attribute in the generated HTML.

  • BCP47 is mandatory and standard for HTML (broken Wikimedia codes are NOT supported)
  • "roa" is a correct BCP47 language code (registered in the IANA database whose origin is legacy and comes from ISO 639-2) for designating any language in the Romance family, so it does not designate specificically Tarandino (it could be as well standard Italian, Latin, French, Spanish, Portuguese, Romanian, Catalan, Occitan, Walloon, Picard, Emiliano, Venitian, Genovese, Rumansh, Sardinian, Corsican...)
  • "Tara" is parsed under BCP47 as a script code but there's absolutely no "Tara" script code that means Tarandino. The script code used in this Wiki is "Latn" (for the Latin script). So "roa-Tara" is completely invalid for the HTML standard which normatively references the BCP47 standard ! Under BCP47, all script codes have four letters and must come from ISO 15924 and there's no such script code in ISO 15924.
  • As a result, this wiki is NOT indexed correctly by search engines ("roa" is ignored, it is definitely not enough qualifying), and search engines have to guess the language (this gives frequently wrong results).
  • Tarandino is still not registered with a plain ISO 639-3 language code (unlike "vec" for Venitian) so it is also not registered in BCP47 as a plain language code.
  • The alternate way would be to use a variant code of Italian (with the form "it-xxxxx", where xxxxx must be at least 5 characters long, or just 4 if it contained digits), but in BCP47 (in fact the IANA language codes registry for BCP47) still does not have any standard variant registered for Italian (this will never occur now, standard variant codes have been deprecated in favor of ISO639-3, 3-letters codes, and all existing standard variant codes have become aliases).
  • The only remaining way is to use a code with the form "it-x-xxxxx", using a private-use extension "xxxxx", which will effectively be conforming to BCP47, and valid for use in the HTML attribute lang="it-x-xxxxx"'.

So I suggest to admins of this wiki to request to the Wiimedia Languages Committee a new code for Tarandino :

  1. it-x-tara (it is acceptable, there's no restrictions on the subtag length or content after the "x-" subtag prefix for private use, including if if contains "-" characters)
  2. it-x-tarandino (it is highly recommanded to avoid unreadable abbreviations in private extensions, because there's no way to decipher them in external non-Wikimedia tools, which may still display the subtag of this private extension), or:
  3. You could even request a shorter code like: "it-x-tar", "it-x-ta" or "it-x-t" (they will all be perfectly valid in BCP47, and conforming for the HTML standard).
  4. roa-x-tara (not more qualifying than roa-tara, but at least it is valid in BCP47 and conforming in HTML).
  5. x-tarandino which is a conforming private-use language code, but this won't be parsed a minimum by search engines (there's also no restrictions on the subtag length or content after the "x-" subtag prefix for private use).

I do think that option #2 is the best, but #1 also fits very well (option #5 is the worst) : at least most of the content here is translatable from Italian with quite good results. The private extension will tell to automatic translators that although this looks like Italian, there's some variant and uncertain results when indecing it as Italian. But at least, even in this case, it will be indexed in the "roa" (Romance) language family (which fully includes Italian and all its regional variants).

This done, the Wiki-code "roa-tara" would be deprecated, and would be aliased in the "roa-tara-wikipedia.org" domain name to go to the same server as "it-x-tarandino.wikipedia.org" (option #2, the interwiki prefix will be "it-x-tarandino:") or "it-x-tara.wikipedia.org" (option #1, the interwiki prefix will be "it-x-tara:").

The generated HTML for this wiki will then correctly use the HTML attribute lang="it-x-tara"(option #1) or lang="it-x-tarandino"(option #2).

The solution proposed here is exactly similar to what has been done for Belarusian (old Tarashkevitsa orthographic variant) in Wikipedia, which also uses a private-use extension (be-x-old).

And the proposed domain name aliasing (to be configured by the Wikimedia Foundation in its DNS servers for the wikipedia.org domain using CNAME entries) will preserve the stability of links (notably the many interwiki links already found in other wikis) because Good URLs on the Internet do not change : the current Internet domain name itself is not bad by itself because no labels in it is ever meant to be a language code in the DNS standard).

Current interwiki links using [[roa-tara: ....]] may just have to replace "roa" by "it-x" if you use option #1 (this just adds one character in the Interwiki prefix), and the "tara" part will not be changed (simplifying edits and allowing others to recognize the new language code) unless you use option #2 or even #3 for shorter interwiki links in wiki code, but they will continue workingas long as Wikimedia DNS servers will preserve the domain name aliasing to the new canonical name (CNAME) of this wiki.

So please contact the Wikimedia language committee to propose and support this change, which will make this wiki conforming to standards, and much better indexed (for now it is completely ignored, only the Italian Wikipedia has its pages indexed).

Alternatively (but this will be MUCH longer):

  • You may campaign with the Wikimedia Languages Committee to support the allocation of a 3-letter code in ISO 639-3 for Tarandino, such as "itn" or "tie" (it will be a very lengthy process).
See the current list of codes starting by 'i' on http://www.sil.org/iso639-3/codes.asp?order=639_3&letter=i
Note that all codes starting by "ta" (such as "tar", "tad", "tae" or "tao"), and all codes starting by "tr" (except "trk" which is deprecated), as well as most codes starting by "ti" or "tn" (such as 'tio", "tne" or "tno"), and most codes starting by "td" (except "tdm", "tdp", "tdw", "tdz") are already allocated in ISO 639-3 to other languages.
  • It will then be registered in a few days in the IANA registry for language subtags in BCP47, making this language code immediately valid in HTML lang="" subtags.
  • And then ask to the Wikimedia Languages Committee to request (to Wikimedia servers admins) the CNAME aliasing of the existing domain name on Wikimedia DNS servers, and the addition of this interwiki code in the Mediawiki configuration of Wikimedia servers.

Final note: the Tarandino translation of the UI in this wiki is performed using a specific project code on TranslateWiki.net. This external project will have to be renamed to.

(If you cant to reply to me, please write in English or French, as I can't read Tarandino and translation from Italian is difficult). Thanks. — Verdy p (talk) 04:50, 29 novembre 2012 (UTC)

My Dear, I don't know why the choose in the past has been roa-tara. Personally, I don't like this code I prefer, it possible it-x-ta. But, I want to know, if possible after few years by this wiki born, change its code? What happens all interwiki links if this code changes? Where Can I send a request for code changing? Can you are so kindly to answer these questions? Thank you in advance --Joe Taras ('ngazzaminde) 17:58, 30 novembre 2012 (UTC)
